Taquero Frankie is putting out some very fine charcoal grilled chicken tacos from the El Pollo Rey food trailer located in the East Side Food Park on Cesar Chavez.

Walking up to the tiny trailer the smell of sizzling chicken flesh is intoxicating. These birds have not died in vain. We inquire as to whether the tortillas are homemade and receive the dread answer of "no".

We ran up to Perez Barbecue in Bartlett Texas this weekend to get another chapter written in the book on Texas barbecue.

Armando Perez has been running this little roadside joint for 25 years in the fading town of 1500 or so people located an hour north of Austin.

We've been hearing about their homemade sausage links for awhile now and with good reason. They're incredible.

This little neighborhood is famous for being one of the last open air drug and prostitution markets in Austin.

We had many peaceful mornings at the old Azul coffee shop in East Austin. Til one morning when we related the sombre news that TJ's Seafood was being consumed by fire as we'd rode by on the way to get our morning cup.

The lady who owned the coffee shop burst into laughter and made a joke about how it was probably from the greasy fryers.

That left a bad taste in our mouth.

Smoked a giant, bone in ham recently and after feeding everybody we could get stopped for about a week we were still left with a giant ham hock bone with a couple pounds of meat clinging to it.

Time to get out the bean kettle.

While there are few things we enjoy more than slow, difficult recipes that challenge relentlessly and only offer a meal after a solid day of cooking and prep, sometimes simplicity is the order of the day in the scrumptious kitchen.
